the construction skills centre of excellence benefits from an
intelligent natural ventilation system and is both heated and cooled by means of
a geothermal ground source heat pump system comprising of 24no 100 metre deep
bores.
thermal analysis has been carried out utilising the latest in 3D
simulation software, which allows the thermal performance of the building to be
modelled taking into account the free cooling provided by the natural
ventilation, ensuring that the design for the geothermal air conditioning system
is optimised.
overnight cooling is provided by opening the natural
ventilators and cooling the floor slabs, thereby reducing the peak day time
cooling load.
hot water is generated by solar collectors mounted on the
roof of the building, a rainwater harvesting system offsets water demand.
electricity demand is offset by generating electricity at site by utilising the
latest vertical wind turbine.
a 42 inch plasma screen located within the
reception area will display 'real time' energy savings and reductions in CO2
levels as the building is operated.
all of the building services are
fully monitored and controlled by a web based building energy management system
which monitors all internal and external conditions with the objective of
providing an optimal internal environment with low running costs and extremley
low carbon emissions.
